The latest iteration of the X5 fleet has been unveiled and highlights the prominence that electrification has in modern BMW nameplates. There are several traits shared across the new X5 lineup, such as the use of the BMW 48V mild hybrid system and eight-speed Steptronic transmission in every model variant.

As for its appearance, the X5 retains the same kidney grille proportions while introducing a new illuminated design accentuated by the slimmer headlight design. Its physique is softer and less segmented than previous offerings. The rear echoes the angular light archetecture and slimmed framing found on the face of the new X5 Interior highlights include things such as the curved 12,3-inch digital dash display and 14,9-inch centre console digital interface, leather seats ans the odd faux wood finish on the dash and other areas.

The 2023 BMW X5 is offered in four distinct offerings.

X5 xDrive30d:

The xDrive30d relies mainly on a diesel variant of BMW’s twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine platform and is the only X5 model to feature a low-pressure turbocharger and a multi-stage turbocharging system. Accompanying it is BMW’s 48V mild hybrid technology represented by a 9 kW electric motor built into the transmission. The total system output for this X5 variant is 219 kW and 670 Nm. The diesel engine receives a slew of hardware changes, such as moving from aluminium pistons to steel pistons, a new common-rail direct injection system and solenoid valves, to name a few.

X5 xDrive40i:

The xDrive40i serves as a petrol-powered middle ground between the X5’s diesel and PHEV offerings. The xDrive40i is motivated by the shared twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder powertrain found in other 2023 X5 models, which have been designed to afford owners greater power and fewer emissions. Output for this variant is claimed to be 280 kW and 540 Nm. This model can utilize the mild hybrid system to allow drivers to propel their vehicles useably all-electric power at very low speeds. Interestingly, the new xDrive40i and xDrive30d can be outfitted with a third row of seats.

xDrive50e:

The xDrive50e showcases the prowess of the Bavarian automaker’s electric mobility technology while making use of the tried and tested BMW turbocharged 3,0-litre six-cylinder platform. Receiving a 70 kW bump in power compared to the xDrive45e, which the xDrive50e replaces, resulting in a maximum output of 360kW and 700 Nm making it more power ladened than stablemates such as the xDrive40i, which employs and relies solely on the same six-cylinder power plant. The latest Plug-in-hybrid SUV offering sees the integration of a larger and more efficient high-voltage battery capable of an all-electric driving range of 110km compared to the previous 94 all-electric driving range of plug-in-hybrid X5 predecessors.

X5 M60i xDrive:

The range-topper and the only 2023 X5 model powered by a newly developed V8. The M60i draws its power from a 4,4-litre twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder granting the almost 2,5 tonne Bavarian a maximum output of 390 kW and 750 Nm, which equals the output of the similarly powered M50i of yesteryear. Despite making the same amount of power, it does have a faster 0-100km/h time.
