2024 Corvette E-Ray breaks the mould with electrified powertrain

If the Dodge Charger Daytona EV didn't do it, the hybrid Corvette E-Ray should be the final nail in the coffin for massive displacement American muscle. The question is, has the Corvette name been tainted or is the 2024 E-Ray a worthy successor? ???? The Corvette. Its long-anticipated next-generation rendition has been teased relentlessly but has finally been revealed to the world bearing a hybrid powertrain. The question is, has the Corvette name been tainted by the adoption of a battery in its drivetrain or is the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray a worthy torch bearer for a nameplate spanning decades?

Aside from the first Corvette badge-bearing model propelled by a hybrid drivetrain, it is also the first model to utilise an AWD system. Let’s break down the E-Ray’s powertrain configuration. The E-Ray’s main supplier of oomph is LT2, a 6,2-Litre naturally aspirated small block V8 producing somewhere around 369 kW and 346 N.m. Assisting the LT2 is a 120 kW electric drive unit feeding its power and 165 N.m to the front wheels.

With a combined power output of 481 kW, it’s all managed and packaged by an eight-speed DCT which delegates power to all four wheels. All of its athletic endowments afford the E-Ray the ability to pace from a standstill to roughly 100km/h in 2,5 seconds which is faster than the previous C7 generation.

Accompanying goodies include eight equal-length intake runners, and a dry sump oil scavenge system that uses three separate oil pumps to avoid any starvation issues during high-acceleration or fast corners.

The 2024 Corvette E-Ray is available in a coupe and convertible configuration, which spans across three distinctive trim levels. The entry-level trim is dubbed the 1LZ and offers features such as a removable roof, carbon ceramic brakes, and Magnetic Selective Ride Control. The runner-up is accordingly dubbed the 2LZ, and on top of all the previous trim offers, the 2LZ introduces heated and ventilated seats, HD rearview cameras, and a 14-speaker sound system from BOSE. Finally the 3LZ, this trim introduces GT2 racing seats Nappa leather and carbon fibre, carbon fibre steering wheel and paddles, as well as a slew of leather-wrapped interior elements.

The 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray is the most powerful production Corvette to date and seemingly the most high-strung entry in the nameplate’s history. The highest level trim will set you back by about R2 million, give or take, but, seeing as the Chevy brand saw its exodus in 2017, there’s no chance we’ll see this thing silently careen through SA’s streets in full “Stealth Mode”.
