Limpopo – A 67-year-old man was arrested after his pair of pit bulls attacked a 43-year-old woman who died in hospital four days after the attack.

Melitta Sekole was reportedly walking when she was attacked by the two pit bulls.

According to News24,  Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said Sekole was in critical condition after the attack.

“The dogs ripped off her clothes and bit her severely. She was rescued by community members and taken to hospital in a critical condition.”

The woman succumbed to injuries, dying on December 27.

The owner of the dogs, Nchabeleng Charles Masebe, was arrested and a case of culpable homicide was opened, Times Live reported.

Calls to ban dog owners from having pit bulls as pets have echoed across South Africa after a spate of attacks.

The Sizwe Kupelo Foundation has started a petition to ban people from having pit bulls as pets in South Africa, “following years of vicious attacks on innocent citizens”.

The petition was directed toward the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didizato.

“Following years of vicious attacks on innocent citizens, including young children, the Sizwe Kupelo Foundation has called for the immediate ban of pit bulls.

“The call has been necessitated by the attacks which seem to continue unabated with the recent attack resulting in the untimely and unfortunate death of a 10-year-old in Gelvandale, Gqeberha in Nelson Mandela Bay,” the foundation said.
