It’s official; engine specs on the 8th generation Ford Mustang lineup have just been released and the American V8 icon boasts more power than ever before, as does the entry-level 2,3-litre EcoBoost motor and the standard V8 powered GT model.
Just in time for Christmas, Ford has decided to whet the appetites of its loyalists and prospective pony purchasers with a reveal of the engine specs for its iconic muscle car lineup. Starting off the list is the Ford Mustang EcoBoost which features the all-new turbocharged 2,3-liter EcoBoost engine delivering 235 kW and 476 N.m. The Mustang EcoBoost also offers the optional active-valve performance exhaust system designed for even more excitement from its turbocharged soundtrack, albeit from a motor with half the cylinder count of the throaty V8s.
Further down the order is the Mustang GT which offers 357 kW and 566 N.m thanks to a new dual-throttle body design with active-valve performance exhaust system. The fourth-generation Coyote V8 helps minimise induction loss by enabling higher air flow rates.
Serving as the 8th generation’s flagship is the Mustang Dark Horse which is touted to offer as much as 373 kW from the naturally aspirated 5,0-litre V8 motor. This is the most powerful non-Shelby Ford Mustang ever offered while torque is rated at 566 N.m, the same as the standard GT derivative.

Upgrades to the sizable engine include a uniquely balanced crankshaft and forged piston connecting rods – the latter first introduced in the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 – to handle higher cylinder pressures and piston speeds. Mustang Dark Horse also sports strengthened camshafts for track-durability needs, including extended operation closer to its 7 500 r/min redline.
“Every time someone gets behind the wheel of a Mustang, we know they want to feel that strong connection to their vehicle – and we’re just as invested in creating that bond,” said Suzanne Robinson, Coyote engine program supervisor. “With the increased responsiveness you get from the new dual throttle bodies, we’re wringing every ounce of performance we can out of our engine so Mustang enthusiasts can have that experience.”
