In love with Ben’s on the Beach!
In a time before Corona, in a time before masks, and in a time before social-distancing, Ben’s on the Beach was one of the last restaurants we went to before the lock-down changed everything. Located right on the beach promenade of Strand with plenty of on-street parking, it’s a 35 minute drive from Cape Town City Centre. And it’s a drive well worth it!
You’ll find a large open dining area inside with the front facing the promenade where you can watch all the activity on the beach. More private dining booths are located a bit further back that allow for a more intimate dining experience.
The menu boasts a bit of everything but it soon becomes apparent that grill is their forte. You can find a great variety of starters, salads, steaks, seafood and desserts for your sweet tooth with a chef’s menu that’s ever changing for those that call Ben’s on the Beach their second home.
Starters
Calamari & Prawn Tempura
Being so close to the ocean and the working harbour of Gordans Bay, we ordered two seafood dishes to share with calamari and prawn tempura giving us a tapas-style start to our lunch. Both dishes were really nice and flavourful. Put away that cutlery and just dig in for delicious, fresh seafood.
Mains
Steak au Poivre
Filet mignon, coated with coarsely cracked peppercorns and Dijon mustard. Cooked perfectly. The peppercorns form a crust on the steak and give a balanced contrast to the rich flavour of the steak. With a brandy cream reduction, this was simply delicious.
Beef Cordon Bleu
This was one item that stood out immediately on the chef’s menu. Envelopes of crumbed beef fillet and rump with rosemary ham, & cheddar cheese filling, on a rich cheese & wine sauce that hit the right spots on every single level.
Overall, I was really impressed with our experience. The food was absolutely delicious, the meat cooked perfectly and the sauces were a delight. It’s a restaurant I don’t mind driving a distance because I will be anticipating each single bite with every passing minute. Highly recommended and Ben’s on the Beach will be seeing me again very very soon.
And the best news? After a brief period of closing their doors during the lock-down, they are back open after putting stringent hygiene practices in place to ensure your peace of mind. A smaller lock-down menu has been launched that still gives you the opportunity to enjoy some of their most popular dishes.
