Bid farewell to Cape Town’s drive-in cinema with one last movie

Alas, not for much longer.

Grant D and the GoDriveIn team recently announced ‘with a heavy heart’ that the drive-in cinema will be closing its doors come 1 September 2023.

Having captured the hearts of retro-enthusiasts, film fanatics and vibe-chasers since it’s inception in the height of the Covid-19 pandemic when distance mattered and entertainment options were limited, GoDriveIn quickly became a fan-favourite long after things went back to normal.

‘We want to say a big thank you to all our fans and loyal customers who supported us along the way. Our journey started at the height of Covid and has continued, unexpectedly, long past it,’ said Grant D and the GoDriveIn team in a post on social media.

Reviving the nostalgic feel of arcade games, roadhouse cuisine and listening to the audios of recent blockbusters and classic favourites via FM radios, it suffices to say, the intimate space will be missed by many, young and old.

‘As we approach three years, we are proud of our achievement and are so grateful for all the joy we brought people in a very dark and unsure time,’ continued the post.

‘We’ve enjoyed watching the classics with you, in the most classic way.’

Before we fall into despair, however, GoDriveIn offers two glimmers of consolation amid its announcement. The first is that it will still be available for special events to cater to those looking to add a melancholic touch to their birthday party or private function.

The second consolation is that GoDriveIn’s door is still ajar, meaning there’s just enough time to catch one final movie before the projector is unplugged indefinitely.

P.S. For anyone interested in keeping the drive-in cinema culture alive, GoDriveIn has announced that the premises will be put on the market after receiving an overwhelm of grieving messages about its closure.
