The local asking price for the 2022 G87 M2 is R1 503 975, nearly double the price of the original M2, which came with an asking price of R841 900 for the DCT variant. Bearing the latest design language of the G8X family, the latest M2 is a shark in wolf’s clothing now with a price tag to match.

With its tamer stablemate, the M240i, tipping the scales and furrowing the brows of many with its price tag that just breaks into the R1 million bracket. Despite its hefty price tag, the M240i slowly showcases why it almost deserves a wallet-whacking price. So the question is, does the M2 have enough to warrant its seven-figure asking price?

As a quick refresher, the M2 is powered by a modified version of the S58, which is a 3,0-litre in-line six engine found in the G80 M3 and G82 M4 which cost around R2 million respectively. Producing 337 kW and 550 N.m, the M2’s hand-me-down motor received a myriad of internal work resulting in a significant alteration of the motor’s factory characteristics.

Tugging at the heartstrings of manual transmission fanatics, the M2 has the option to be equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. Furthering its appeal and bolstering its need for R1,5 million, the g87 M2 remains a rear-wheel-drive product, which is a standout compared to the rest of BMW’s rank. The entirety of the car rest’s within the frame of a specially tuned chassis assisted by impressive suspension elements that have buttoned up the car’s driving capabilities significantly.

The G87’s model predecessor, the F87, set a high bar not only for its eventual and current successor but also for the rest of the BMW M fleet. The M2 has yet to post an official Nurburgring time which would act as the perfect yardstick to square up the G87 M2. South Africa can expect the arrival of this new coupe in the second quarter of next year.
