The BMW I Vision DEE is weird. Underneath its eye-brow furrowing design lies a myriad of technological advancements that will become staples of the BMW brand in the coming years. Let’s dive in.

“Showcasing whats possible” – Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG

The BMW I Vision DEE, DEE being an abbreviation of Digital Emotional Experience, showcases the technological advancements integrated into the Neue Klasse platform-based cars. In the I Vision DEE, the key points in its design are the infotainment upgrades, an augmented reality capable heads-up-display, “phygital” icons and the chameleon E Ink technology.

The car’s exterior and interior have been deliberately pared down to allow the aforementioned elements to stand out. On the car’s exterior, we can see a large horizontal kidney grille as opposed to the now common rabbit teeth which can be altered slightly to allow for a more personalized look. It retains the classic three-box sedan design alongside iconic features such as the Hofmeister kink. The skin of the car is segmented into 240 individual sections that can be controlled individually through the E Ink technology allowing for almost unpaired on the fly personalization.

The interior appears barren compared to modern production BMW but this redux cockpit allows for a view of BMW’s new heads-up-display, which is displayed on the windscreen instead of a digital dash, that works in tandem with BMW’s new Mixed Reality Slider that incrementally expands the heads-up-display. Beginning at the first notch allows drivers to view basic information but turned up all the way, and the I Vision DEE ferries its passengers through virtual worlds.

“With the BMW i Vision Dee, we are showcasing what is possible when hardware and software merge. In this way, we are able to exploit the full potential of digitalisation to transform the car into an intelligent companion. That is the future for automotive manufacturers – and, also, for BMW: the fusion of the virtual experience with genuine driving pleasure” — Oliver Zipse
