After receiving the footage, the SPCA’s Inspectorate team immediately jumped into action and started the investigation. The City of Cape Town’s law enforcement: Animal Control Unit was also called in for assistance.

He added, “Unfortunately, the other culprits were not at home at the time of the investigation, resulting in their not being arrested. Their identities are known to the SPCA and Law Enforcement, and they will be apprehended, arrested, and brought before a court.”

The SPCA laid criminal charges of animal fighting in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 against the culprits at the Mfuleni South African Police Service (SAPS). The detained suspect remained in the SAPS’s custody throughout the weekend until his court appearance on Monday, 28 November.

The case was remanded for additional investigation after the accused was released on R500 bail. He’ll return to court on 15 February 2023.
