Reportedly, sources close to the Chinese automaker have divulged information to foreign news publications that a body-on-frame double-cab bakkie will be introduced in the Australian market. Various rumours and theories are floating around suggesting that the seemingly inevitable Chery bakkie will be a rebadged product from another Chinese brand, it’ll feature an EV powertrain or may even be a plug-in hybrid, but nothing has been confirmed, as company officials haven’t confirmed nor denied anything.

The idea of a Chery badged bakkie is not a new topic, with the idea being addressed in 2022 by Charlie Zhang, Chery International’s executive vice president. “We are also working on the feasibility study of developing the pickups because the pickup market in Australia is something very, very important. So I believe in the next [few] years, we will develop the pickup.”

Speaking to CarsGuide Australia, an official from Chery’s Australian branch provided insight into the possibility of a double-cab Chery bakkie.

“I would love a Chery ute. Look, there’s currently no firm plans or commitments that we’d be able to share at the moment. Other than that, it’s not lost on us how popular those vehicles are in Australia and we’d love to be able to offer customers an option in that space.” -Chery Australia Managing Director Lucas Harris.

Since the South African and Australian markets are similar and receive similar products, this is also a new bakkie that could be on the radar for local roads. Speculation points to a mid-size double-cab bakkie that could rival existing bakkie models such as the Hilux, Navara and Ranger. Reports suggest that the cabin layout and tech may be akin to that of the Omoda C5. Digital artist Ivano Mattiello has generated an image for CAR Magazine that would combine the current Chery front fascia and brand identity onto a double cab platform – would this be a welcomed addition to South Africa?
