Dark start to 2024: Eskom announces return of loadshedding

The return of Eskom’s notorious indefinite blackouts marks the start of (a not-so-bright) 2024, as a result of a setback combined with the loss of generating units and projected increased demand.

This follows shortly after the power utility confirmed the continued suspension of loadshedding yesterday, which was set to last until next week Friday at 4pm.

According to the power alert, stage 2 will commence at 5am on Tuesday until 4pm. Thereafter, Stage 3 will take over until 5am on Wednesday.

‘This pattern of stage 2 loadshedding in the morning and stage 3 loadshedding in the evening will be repeated daily until further notice,’ read the power alert.

‘With the current intensified maintenance aimed at improving the fleet performance, we had a setback of three generating units not coming back online as anticipated, said Eskom.

‘This coupled with a loss of six generating units and projected increase in electricity demand requires stage 2 loadshedding to be implemented.’

The power utility added that it would closely monitor the power system and announce any changes if necessary.

Unplanned outages are currently at 16 231MW of generating capacity, while the capacity out of service for planned maintenance is 8 451MW.

‘Eskom teams are working tirelessly to ensure that 4 921MW of generating capacity is returned to service before the end of the week,’ the power alert continued.

Eskom also urged the public to use electricity sparingly and efficiently, such as switching off geysers and pool pumps between 5pm and 9pm to help lower demand and alleviate the pressure on the power system which contributes to lower stages of loadshedding.

Meanwhile, City of Cape Town released its latest loadshedding update, which sees City customers scheduled for stage 1 loadshedding from 5am to 10pm and stage 3 from 10pm to 5am.

This pattern will be implemented from Tuesday, 2 January, to Thursday, 4 January.
