Several UK residents have gotten the surprise of a lifetime as a rare black fox wanders around Wales. The animal has been spotted in the towns of Berry and Sully (in the Vale of Glamorgan area) according to The Independent, and is most likely a local escaped pet.
Still, the excitement of the loose animal has inspired headlines around the world, with some even likening the fox to a mythical creature. The truth is, though-- this animal is very real, and it's still out and about. Check out this fascinating TikTok video that one resident sent to @independent!

Isn't this fox so beautiful? We're honestly surprised that there aren't more videos like this from residents who've seen the animal. Especially for such a gorgeous, rare sight--this creature sure is elusive!
Readers from North America might not see what's so rare about a black colored fox--which is technically called a 'silver fox'--but foxes of any color aren't native to the UK at all. Now we understand why everyone was so surprised to see this stunning animal!
However, there are a few red foxes who wander Wales every day, and they're even rumored to be tame. These animals were likely part of the fur trade before escaping or being set free.
"Silver foxes are the same species as the red foxes we have living wild in the UK," explained a Welsh representative from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), "but with different colouration [...] Traditionally, they were bred for their fur but are now sometimes kept as exotic pets."
It's true! AAbout 10% of foxes have naturally-occuring black coats, according to The Independent, so this creature's dark coloring only adds to its rarity--and its beauty!
Anyone who spots this silver fox in Wales is urged to call the RSPCA emergency line at 0300 1234 999 so they can locate the creature.
