It’s time to get revved up this Sunday, 5 February, as the Kalk Bay Veteran’s Run is back for another magnificent event. Take the chance to drive back in time and enjoy a show of gorgeous vintage vehicles.

The Veteran’s Run is organised by the Crankhandle Club and is open to all vehicles manufactured before 31 December 1918.

The run commemorates the inaugural run of the Automobile Association of South Africa in September 1901, which had 12 cars and a couple of motorcycles taking part.

In the first ever run, the cars departed from Greenmarket Square at 2.45pm, driving down Main Road to Kalk Bay. On arrival, tea, strawberries and cream were served.

The vehicles on the run represented half of all the motor vehicles in the Cape at the time, including a Decauville, Royal Enfield Quad, two Benzes, two Daimler wagonettes, three Cudells, a Toledo steam car, a De Dion Bouton tricycle, a Locomobile and two Thomas motorcycles.

The 2023 run starts from a clubhouse in Wynberg and takes motorists to Jubilee Square in Simon’s Town. There is a 20 minute stop along the way at Kalk Bay Harbour.

This year’s event has over 25 entries including both cars and bikes, hailing not just from Cape Town but from all around the country.

See the route for the run below, and choose where you’d prefer to spectate from.
