#Holler: A beacon of light amidst a gender-based violence pandemic

It’s no secret that gender-based violence (GBV) is an ongoing pandemic that’s been ravaging societies across the globe. But with all pandemics, beacons of light within communities guide those in need towards a place of safety, empowerment and support.

The #Holler initiative is an incredible embodiment of just that.

The digital safe space was launched during an event on Women’s Day hosted by Mall of the South and Epic Foundation, the creators of #Holler. At the launch, a number of quick-fix speakers shared their personal experiences with GBV expressing not only how they overcame their abuse but also how they are using their experience to become pillars of strength in our society that very much needs it.

Alta McMaster, founder of Epic Foundation, is a rape survivor herself and has endured several difficulties, giving her a profound grasp of society’s need to support survivors.

“We live in a society where an increasingly high number of South Africans are exposed to trauma, crime, unemployment, and other socio-economic challenges. Gender-based violence has become a pandemic that seems to be chipping away at the fabric of society. Our mission is to comfort, support and provide the tools to empower these individuals to move from victims to survivors.

This extensively comprehensive online resource was created to educate, guide, and support GBV survivors as well as anybody wishing to provide assistance or find out more.
From domestic abuse stats, red flags to look out for in potential abusers, to how to report a case as well as access to legal and social support groups.
#HollerSafeSpace provides a safe environment to seek guidance on what to do, where to go, and how to get treatment if you’re a victim of abuse. It also serves as a platform for those in the victim’s social circle or outsiders to access the resources that can assist them in leaving abusive relationships safely.
