‘I will not ask why I am removed,’ says Bheki Cele as Cabinet reshuffle looms

Cape Town – Bheki Cele has reportedly said that he is not worried about the upcoming cabinet reshuffle, adding he will continue with his work as police minister in the meantime.

Cele said this on Thursday during a visit to the Sophiatown police station amid a resurgence of gang-related violence in nearby Westbury, The Sowetan reported.

“Why should I be worried?” Cele responded.

“I did not ask when I was put [in] and I will not ask why I am removed. So why should I be worried?

“This is not an inheritance … this is a job, you do the job you are given. When the job is taken and given to someone else, you go on with life. You think I can stop working and be worried about coming in?

“It’s not a stokvel here. We work,” the report quoted Cele as saying.

News24 reported on Tuesday that Cele was tipped to become the new minister of State Security Agency when President Cyril Ramaphosa finally announces changes to his Cabinet.

Ramaphosa is expected to unveil a new Cabinet “in a number of days”.

Speaking following Tuesday’s resignation of former deputy president David Mabuza as MP, the president’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya  confirmed that there were “vacancies in the Cabinet. We also have a vacancy in the role of the deputy president”.

“There is a sense of urgency that the president fills those vacancies as soon as possible. In a matter of days that announcement will be made,” Mail and Guardian quoted Magwena as saying.

Magwena’s media briefing at the Union Buildings on Wednesday came just hours after the Presidency confirmed that Ramaphosa had accepted Mabuza’s resignation.
