Ineos has unveiled a prototype of its hydrogen-powered off-roading Grenadier model. The company views hydrogen as a crucial fuel for the future, alongside the petrol and diesel engines sourced from BMW that are available in the regular Grenadier model.

This demonstration vehicle incorporates a BMW hydrogen fuel-cell system and electric motors.
Over the past year, the Austrian engineering firm AVL has been responsible for developing this prototype. Visually, the hydrogen-powered vehicle differs only slightly from its counterparts, with a taller bonnet bulge to accommodate the larger fuel cell under the bonnet. However, Ineos clarifies that this feature may not be present in a production version.

Modifications have been made to the ladder frame and rear axle of the Grenadier to accommodate the hydrogen fuel-cell system. Additionally, the rear wheels have been equipped with torque vectoring, offering advantages for both off-road and on-road driving.

Specific details and performance figures for the hydrogen fuel cell powertrain have not been disclosed as of yet. The company mentions that the electric drive units provide “true torque vectoring drive control to each rear wheel.” However, it is worth noting that the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, which uses a similar powertrain, features a single rear-mounted electric motor with an output of 295 kW.

According to the manufacturer, the hydrogen-powered Grenadier has undergone extensive testing to ensure that it’s on and off-road capabilities, as well as its towing capacities, remain uncompromised. The vehicle has successfully tackled challenging off-road trails in the Austrian mountains and various other off-road obstacles around Graz.
Ineos Automotive CEO Lynn Calder expressed that the hydrogen-powered Grenadier prototype, along with their forthcoming all-electric model scheduled for 2026, demonstrates the company’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.
