Irish President and Wife Confirm Their Beloved Bernese Mountain Dog Has Passed

If you've happened to see any video footage of Irish President, Michael D. Higgins over the past several years, you've no doubt "met" his beloved Bernese Mountain dog, Brod. The pup, who's been noted to be "one of the most photographed dogs in Ireland," has sadly passed away at the age of 11 years old.
The devastating news was confirmed by Higgins and his wife, Sabina, and was shared on the @presidentirl TikTok account, which you can see here.

The caption on the post reads: "Bród was 11 years and two months at Áras an Uachtaráin, having come to the Áras as a 8 week old puppy. Bród was a very much loved dog by all that met him and he enjoyed meeting with the thousands of members of the public who came to Áras an Uachtaráin over the years and he was probably one of the most photographed dogs in Ireland."
The statement continues: "He will be missed by the President, Sabina and all at the Áras, particularly Misneach, the President's remaining dog who is two and a half years old, and who has shared his space with Bród over recent months and was his constant companion, aware of Bród's situation and very attentive to him."
As you might recall, Misneach recently made headlines while greeting US President Joe Biden on his recent trip to Ireland. The young pup gave a colorful bark and seemed to be protective of his master's home, which isn't uncommon for the breed, given that Bernese Mountain dogs were bred to protect pastures and farms.
After hearing this news, it's safe to say that collective hearts are breaking across the world for the President and his wife. The bonds we form with our pets due to their unconditional love and devotion are something that cannot be replaced. No matter how old a pup is or how expected their passing might be, it's still just so difficult to come to terms with never seeing a treasured family member again.
May the President and his wife always treasure the beautiful memories that they shared with Brod over the years. In addition, one can hope that they'll find some comfort and peace in the fact that so many people's lives were touched by this incredible pup.
