Journey to Jazz: A world-class music festival comes to the Karoo

Prince Albert, a creative and culinary village in the Karoo, will host its first-ever world-class jazz festival, Journey to Jazz, in the first week of May.

The festival is produced alongside 100 of the town’s youth through the Prince Albert Community Trust’s (PACT) outreach programmes.

Journey to Jazz is a showcase of the skills developed by the youth, which includes event production, sound engineering, photography, videography, media, marketing and music performance.

Several of these young people’s mentors are residents in the town and are recognised professionals in their fields.

Brenda Sisane, the Creative Director for Journey to Jazz 2023, says that music has always united people, and jazz, in particular, has ‘a knack for storytelling’.

Jazz is recognised and celebrated throughout the world. As such, Journey to Jazz’s dates of 3 to 7 May were chosen to coincide with International Jazz Day, celebrated annually on 30 April.

Journey to Jazz boasts an impressive line-up of artists: Celle and Adrian Adriaansen, The Mike Rossi Project: Roots and Routes, Hassan’adas, Kyle Shepherd Trio, Melanie Scholtz featuring Hein Ven Der Geyn, Derek Gripper, UCT Little Big Band, Amanda Tiffin Trio, Karien De Waal and friends, Ramon Alexander and the Maties Jazz Society, Karoo Jazz Project with Tribal Echo and Ramon Alexander, Unity Vocal Quartet with Mads and Chester Meyer.

Nestled under the majestic Swartberg mountains, Prince Albert is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Swartberg Pass.

The town has established itself as a creative and culinary destination, and Journey to Jazz will reflect this reputation with a long weekend of festivities and great music.

Prince Albert’s main road will be the centre of the action on Friday and Saturday. It will host a series of markets, food stalls, and local restaurants, welcoming local music artists, buskers, dancers, painters and more.

The principal performances will take place in the NG Church on the main road. Tickets will be sold for each performance, with a limited number of weekend passes available, and the proceeds going to PACT to continue the good work this NPO performs on a daily basis.

For festival-goers looking for more intimate and exclusive performances, there will be a select number of lunch or dinner concerts happening at some of the restaurant venues in town.

Seats for these exclusive concerts will be limited to 50 per performance.

Prince Albert and the Karoo are known for legendary hospitality, and the town has a variety of welcoming guesthouses. The people from the town have also curated several other experiences that will be on offer, with a percentage of the earnings going to PACT.
