Last week, it was reported that a Somali girl, aged between 15 and 17 years old, was kidnapped by five men, four black and one Somali national, who had also pistol-whipped her father at the shop.
It was also reported that a ransom demand of R600,000 had been made.
Other media outlets indicated that a ransom demand of R600,000 was made.
However, Somali Community Board of South Africa chairperson Abdirizak Ali Osman confirmed to IOL that reports had been inaccurate, adding that he had been in touch with the woman’s in-laws, who said that the 20-year-old was in fact married and currently living with her husband.
“I spoke to her this afternoon (Monday) and she confirmed that she had been with him of her own consent,” Osman told IOL. “Nobody forced her and there’s nothing such as a kidnapping.”
Osman said previously that the woman had been removed from her marital home by her father following a dispute and that he was still trying to get a hold of the woman’s father to ascertain what happened on the day of the incident.
“That’s what they didn’t tell me. They said that didn’t happen. The man just went to the house and she willingly went with him to the previous house. I can neither confirm nor deny what happened at the shop on Tuesday.”
Many of the local shopkeepers were oblivious to the kidnapping, including local ward councillors.
All queries to SAPS Spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi related to the kidnapping, were referred to the spokesperson of the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) for a response.
Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani confirmed that they were busy with an investigation.
“The investigation is at a sensitive stage and no information can be divulged at this moment,” Hani said.
Last week, an 18-year-old boy and an unidentified 15-year-old girl became the latest victims of a spate of kidnappings in Cape Town after they were allegedly snatched on Wednesday morning.
It is believed that the Grade 11 learner was taken on his way to write his final exam and was allegedly submerged in water until his abductors believed he was dead.
