Kind Farmer Lets Calf Live in His Backyard After His Mother Couldn't Feed Him

The world needs more uplifting stories like this.

One Colorado farmer is a hero to a tiny orphaned calf, and now they're both gaining lots of popularity after their story went viral online.

They first rose to Internet fame after someone alerted the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office that a calf was "spotted living in a residential neighborhood near East Smoky Hill Road and South Himalaya Street." As unusual as this is, a very lucky deputy got to see that it was true.

What an adorable surprise! We'd be over the moon to see this sweet little calf while on the job, and it looks like Deputy Ferguson feels the same way. We're so jealous that she got to give the little one a cuddle!

As KDVR reports, the homeowner told officials, "he owns a ranch in Douglas County. A cow at the ranch gave birth to a calf but was not able to produce enough milk to feed the baby. The homeowner brought the calf back to his Arapahoe County residence to nurse the calf."

What a kind thing to do! Caring for a calf can be around-the-clock work, notes South Dakota State University. They require 2 to 3 feedings per day, frequent monitoring, and lots of room to sleep, play, and grow. For Benjamin, that looks like a quiet backyard and a dog house for shelter, though he'll be reunited with his mama in just a few weeks.

We were happy to read that Benjamin's owner was not fined since the calf's situation is temporary. Normally, Arapahoe County does not allow livestock in residential neighborhoods, and that will continue to be the case moving forward.

Clearly, this ranch owner cares deeply about his animals, and we think that's the real reason everyone loves this story so much. Of course, this baby cow's cuteness doesn't hurt one bit!
