A Cape clawless otter was seen crossing the road in front of Sotano’s in Mouille Point at 2.45pm on Tuesday 22 November. The otter-spotter shared pictures of the sweet sighting.

According to Tony McKeever, who spotted the otter, this chap was three metres away from his two labradors but seemed absolutely calm.
“[He] raised himself on his two back legs, ‘standing up,’ then jogged 500 meters along the grass towards the beach and rocks at the Fritz Sonnenberg traffic lights. I thought he was off to the sea there, but instead, he crossed the road again. An odd but very special sighting—now all the City of Cape Town needs to do is produce road signs reading “Beware: Sea Otters Crossing.”

Remember: Don’t cuddle the otters
At the beginning of this month, the City released a warning reminding visitors to maintain a respectful distance from wildlife and posted a sign advising what to do when they encounter an otter.
This warning followed after posts circulated on social media platforms showing visitors cuddling and handling a Cape clawless otter at the tidal pool.
Cape clawless otters may look cute, but they are still wild animals and can be unpredictable.
