According to Autocar, the upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 is poised to boast a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine generating up to 435 kW of power, a move reportedly confirmed by senior officials at the German automaker.

The impetus behind this potential shift lies partially in the recent introduction of the CLE 53, featuring a turbocharged six-cylinder engine. Concerns have arisen that consumers may baulk at paying a premium for a 63-badged vehicle equipped with fewer cylinders, notwithstanding its superior power output. This dilemma underscores the broader industry trend of downsizing engines in response to stringent emissions regulations.

Mercedes-Benz had ventured into downsizing with the C63, equipping it with a hybridized 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine derived from the A45 S powerplant. However, this departure from the traditional V8 configuration elicited mixed reactions within the motoring community. Markus Schäfer, head of Mercedes-Benz’s Research and Development operations, has acknowledged the significance of customer feedback in shaping the company’s future direction. Autocar reports that he emphasized the importance of closely monitoring sales of the C63 and GLC 63 models to inform strategic decisions. Speaking at a recent automotive event in Beijing, Schäfer stated, “We will stay close to the feedback of people and customers, and then we will go from that.”

The decision to potentially reintroduce the V8 engine is further underscored by the sluggish sales performance of the hybrid models. Although the latest iteration of the C63 was test-driven as early as 2022, its market debut in the UK has been delayed.  The AMG 63 badge carries a storied legacy of muscular V8 engines, synonymous with uncompromising performance and exhilarating driving experiences.
