Cape Town – An off-duty policeman in Durban is facing murder charges for allegedly shooting and killing his girlfriend during a domestic dispute.

The incident occurred near a tavern in the Emachobeni area in Inanda. It is believed that the victim was also a police officer.

According to witnesses, the couple was arguing on the street when the suspect pulled out his state firearm and shot his girlfriend, IOL reported.

A community patroller who tried to intervene was shot in the arm.

The suspect then turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head, but he survived and was taken to a nearby hospital, the report said.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the case.

“Ipid national spokesperson Robbie Raburabu said: “The police officer in question will be charged in court in absentia for murder because he is still critical in ICU after killing his girlfriend and turning thereafter shooting himself.

“He survived the shooting and was t aken to hospital,” the report quoted Ipid national spokesperson Robbie Raburabu as saying.

Last year, Tembisa hospital in Johannesburg was temporarily closed following a fatal shooting incident between a police officer and his girlfriend, a nurse assistant.

According to a statement issued by the Gauteng Department of Health, the 30-year-old police officer entered the facility driving a state vehicle.

He then called his partner who was on duty at the time to come to the parking lot.

“Upon arrival, the police officer opened fire on the Enrolled Nursing Assistant and turned the gun on himself,” the statement said.

The nurse died on the scene while the police officer remained in a critical condition.

News24 reported at the time that a colleague of the slain nurse said that the man and the woman had an argument before the man fired the shots.
