It has been a tense few days for the South African political milieu following the Section 89 Phala Phala report scandal, which implicated President Cyril Ramaphosa in violating several sections of the country’s constitution.
It emerged on Thursday that Ramaphosa was intending to resign after the independent panel led by former chief justice, Sandile Ngcobo, released the report.

It has since been reported by people familiar with the matter that President Cyril Ramaphosa has advised his confidants that he has changed his mind and will not be resigning.
News24 reports that Ramaphosa is “seriously considering” requesting a legal review of the report’s findings.
“It may be in the long-term interest and sustainability of our constitutional democracy, well beyond the Ramaphosa presidency, that such a clearly flawed report is challenged, especially when it’s being used to remove a sitting head of state,” says president spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya.
According to two Senior ANC politicians, Ramaphosa will also stand for another term as party head. The party’s elective conference starts on Friday, 16 December 2022.
The ANC national working committee is due to hold their Special NEC meeting at 2pm on Sunday to discuss its response to the panel’s report. Members of Parliament are scheduled to vote on whether or not to adopt it at a sitting on Tuesday, 6 December.
It is unclear when Ramaphosa intends to launch his legal review of the report, but it is likely to have an impact on whether the sitting goes ahead, as reported by Business Live.
