Police arrest ‘most wanted’ suspect linked to Mamelodi tavern shooting

Cape Town – Gauteng police have arrested the man allegedly linked to a tavern shooting in Mamelodi and ‘several’ other cases, including murder and attempted murder.

The 25-year-old suspect was arrested by the Tshwane Anti-Drug Unit and Memelodi Combat Team in Mamelodi on Thursday, police said in a statement.

According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo the suspect was on the police’s most wanted list.

“The suspect who was found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition during his arrest is linked with several cases that include car hijacking, murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm,” said Masondo.

The arrest followed months after a man was shot dead at Monaco Tavern in Mamelodi in July.

At the time, Gauteng police said three suspects wearing balaclavas and armed with pistols arrived at the venue and fired shots in the air, before approaching a 33-year-old man and shooting him twice.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Acting Gauteng police commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni applauded the investigating team and said he was pleased with the manner and vigour in which this team has been handling the investigation.
