France vs Argentina 4-3 Highlights 30 June 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia
Nineteen-year-old Kylian Mbappe bagged a brace as France defeated Lionel Messi's Argentina 4-3 to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2018 World Cup.
Antoine Griezmann almost opened the scoring for France in the eighth minute with a cracking free-kick from just outside the box that rattled the crossbar.
However, Griezmann would not be denied the opening goal in the 12th minute as he netted from the penalty spot after Marcos Rojo brought down Kylian Mbappe in the box.
Les Bleus were comfortable on the ball after 20 minutes, looking to suck Argentina into their own half and use the pace of Mbappe to do damage on the counter. Di Maria eventually replied for Argentina five minutes before the break with a sensational left-footed strike from outside the box that sailed into the top corner.
The pace of the match fizzled out towards the end of the first stanza as both sides went into the break level at 1-1. Argentina grabbed the lead three minutes after the break with Gabriel Mercado inadvertently turning Lionel Messi’s strike into the back of Hugo Lloris' goal.
Benjamin Pavard brought Les Bleus level three minutes before the hour, though, with a wonderful first-time half-volley from the edge of the box into the top corner, 2-2. Mbappe restored the lead for France three minutes after the hour mark with a close-range finish after a goal-mouth scramble in the box.
Mbappe completed his brace in the 68th minute with a clinical low finish after he was played in by Olivier Giroud. France were controlling the match with 10 minutes to go, enjoying their two-goal cushion while Argentina looked threatening on the break.
Sergio Aguero got the third goal for La Albiceleste in stoppage time but it was too little too late as France held on for the win.
