Top Gun 2: Tom Cruise teases first photo, production details and more
Tom Cruise is back and is ready to take flight as American Naval pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun the sequel.
Top Gun is seen as one of Tom Cruise’s greatest hits and is highly regarded to be the role that put him on the map as an actor when he played hotshot fighter pilot Maverick back in 1986.
According to reports, the sequel titled Top Gun: Maverick has been in the works since 2010, and filming has officially begun with the movie set to be released by July 2019.
Who is directing Top Gun 2?
Top Gun: Maverick will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who has previously made Cruise-starrer Oblivion (2013) and Tron: Legacy (2010).
“It’s just a different world now, so you can’t remake the first movie,” director Kosinski said in an interview with ComingSoon.net in October last year.
“It has to adapt, but I certainly want to re-create the experience of that movie, which gives you a front seat into the world of naval aviation and what it’s like to be in a fighter jet.”
Top Gun 2: Updates
As of recently, Cruise himself took to Twitter and Instagram to tease some production details of the sequel. In the picture, Cruise gives a nod to Maverick’s popular dialogue in the original, “I feel the need, the need for speed.”
Even though the supporting cast of the sequel is yet to be announced, Val Kilmer is reportedly set to reprise his role as Iceman in Top Gun 2.
There’s been no word on whether Kelly McGillis, who played Cruise’s love interest, will return though.
It looks like production on Top Gun: Maverick has only just started, but some fans of the original film, simply cannot wait until July 2019.
