Pregnant nurse sustains ‘minor bruises’ after patient assaults her

Cape Town – Police arrested a male patient after he assaulted a pregnant nurse at Relela Clinic in Bolobedu, outside of Tzaneen in Limpopo.

The incident is alleged to have taken place on Wednesday, 19 April 2023 at about 11:50, police said.

“A preliminary investigation into the incident suggests that the 30-year-old suspect entered the clinic and demanded medical attention from the nurse who was attending to other patients.

“While waiting for the nurse, the suspect went on to physically attack the female nurse,” police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said.

He said that the suspect allegedly fled the scene after the attack.

But according to News24, the man was arrested on Saturday.

Following the incident, Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba has called on the community of Bolobedu to stand up and protect healthcare workers, the report said.

“I am appalled by this incident that is happening at the backdrop of the kidnapping and rape of a nurse at Madumane, which is a stone’s throw away from Relela,” she said.

“The onslaught against healthcare professionals needs to be stopped now, because one day we will wake up with no one to take care of us when we are sick because no one wants to work in an environment where they don’t feel safe. The community must stand up,” the report quoted Ramathuba as saying.

Ramathuba told eNCA that the nurse sustained “some minor bruises” and she had since been admitted to a hospital where she was being monitored.
