Maximilian Günther has hailed his stunning victory last weekend in
the inaugural Tokyo E-Prix as a "proud moment", in what was dubbed
as the biggest race in Formula E's history. Formula E has worked
hard to make a race happen in the Japanese capital for years, and
at long last, it happened last Saturday. Formula E became the first
championship to ever race in Tokyo, and attracted the likes of Yuki
Tsunoda and Fast and Furious actor Sung Kang. Günther came within a
whisker of pole position, after being defeated in the final duel by
just 0.021s. However, a masterful strategy saw him claim victory in
arguably the biggest race in the rapidly growing championship's
history . "Obviously, it feels super, super good," Günther told
RacingNews365 . "I had a great time in Japan, I really love the
place, the city and obviously, the racetrack was a lot of fun to
drive. And we had a brilliant weekend. "I think it's amazing the
locations we're going to in Formula E and for sure Tokyo already
before the season, everyone I think marked it as a big highlight of
the calendar. "The way it worked out, obviously, it's brilliant.
And yeah, a great and proud moment to be the first winner in
Tokyo." 'Feeling strong' The German's victory has elevated him to
fifth in the drivers' championship, a deserved feat given his
consistent start to Season 10. He has scored points in every race
this season, a stark difference to this time last season, where he
was yet to score a point. Günther is perhaps not a dark horse for
the title but an outright contender instead, as he has shown his
and Maserati's strength over one-lap and in race trim. "What I can
say is for sure that I'm feeling good and feeling strong with what
we're building here together as a team," added Günther. "I feel
great in the car. "We showed it not only in Tokyo but as well in
the race before. I think there's probably quite a few guys who are
in the fight for it this year. But certainly we feel good and we we
want to keep going in such good form."
