Ramaphosa to launch Border Management Authority in Musina

Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa is on Thursday, set to officially launch the Border Management Authority (BMA) in Musina, Limpopo, as a significant milestone in the country’s border control efforts.

The BMA, established as a schedule 3 (A) public entity on April 1, 2023, aims to create a comprehensive and integrated border management system.

This platform is designed to enhance border security, facilitate safe travel, and promote efficient trade within South Africa.

Ramaphosa will also host President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe for discussions and a tour of the Beitbridge border.

The BMA’s mandate covers various aspects of border law enforcement, including health, immigration, access control, biosecurity, and infrastructure development, with the goal of effectively addressing dynamic challenges and safeguarding South Africa’s borders while upholding human rights.

Since its inception, the BMA has already demonstrated success, including the interception of stolen vehicles. Its establishment is a direct response to Cabinet’s decision in June 2013, driven by the need to address weaknesses identified in border management by the National Intelligence Co-ordinating Committee (NICOC) 2012 Feasibility Study.
