Ramaphosa’s Cabinet reshuffle lambasted

Cape Town — President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Cabinet reshuffle have been slammed as “redundant” and “a gratuitous bloating” of the Cabinet.

The EFF described the reshuffle as “nothing but an exercise in ensuring that those who formed part of [Ramaphosa’s] factional warfare in the lead-up to his re-election as the ANC president are rewarded through patronage.”

The party further criticised Khumbudzo Ntshavheni’s appointment as Minister in the Presidency, saying that the move was “purely factional and has nothing to do with competency or ability”, also highlighting her time leading the Communications and Digital Technologies Department.

The EFF has also labelled Kgosientsho Ramokgopa’s appointment as the new minister of electricity “redundant, as there is a minister for Energy and Public Enterprises respectively”.

The DA’s John Steenhuisen described  Ramaphosa’s Cabinet changes as “less a reshuffle and more a gratuitous bloating”.

“The Minister of Electricity and of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, will add an additional R74 million to the public wage bill.

“It is simply unfathomable that the president can push this cost onto the South African taxpayer while the nation languishes under sluggish economic growth, the highest unemployment rate in recent history, and an electricity crisis that is shedding jobs at record numbers.”

Steenhuisen went on to criticise the lack of expertise brought in from the private sector, as well as the lack of action taken against ministers who have failed in the past.

“President Ramaphosa has merely moved around a batch of broken eggs in the same basket,” he said.

Mmusi Maimane, leader of Build One South Africa, said the reshuffle “was a window-dressing exercise in an old age home of corruption” and a “hugely disappointing affair”.

“As South Africans worry about the economy, crime, education, health care, and keeping the lights on, the president saw it fit to simply rearrange the employment conditions of old, out-of-touch ANC deployees in Cabinet, giving many people new roles to repeat old failures.”
