After years of expectation and speculation, Suzuki has finally released a 5-door Jimny model to complement the iconic 3-Door. Here is a conclusive overview of the model anticipated to arrive in South Africa by the end of the year.

With next to no stylistic change, outside of an extra two doors, Suzuki’s newest Jimny made its debut in India at the Auto Expo 2023.
Suzuki’s kei car 3-door model sold in Japan was 3 395 mm in length, while the global model extended to 3 695 mm. The lengthened 5-Door now comes in at 3 985mm with an elongated wheelbase of 2 590 mm. This makes the latest Jimny iteration 340 mm longer than the previous, 3-Door model. However, the height and width remain the same as the international 3-Door, standing at 1 720 mm tall and 1 645 mm wide.
Interestingly, the powertrain sees no significant upgrade from the 3-Door model, despite having the capacity for more passengers. The 1,5-litre petrol engine is a mild hybrid which produces 78 kW @ 6000 r/min and 134 N.m @ 6000 r/min, delivering the power to a four-wheel drive system. The 5-Door Jimny offers serious off-road capability with 2WD-high, 4WD-high, and 4WD-low modes as well as a 36-degree approach angle, a 24-degree breakover angle, a 50-degree departure angle, and 210 mm of ground clearance. Gearbox options include a five-speed manual transmission and a 4-speed torque-converter automatic.

As mentioned earlier, the 5-Door sees very little change from an aesthetic perspective, featuring the same boxy silhouette as the classic Jimny, as well as inheriting the flared wheel arches, round headlights, slatted front grille, exposed rear hinges, and off-road tires from it’s predecessor. 15-inch wheels with 195/80 rubber carry the car, with a spare one mounted on the back.

While the interior remains almost identical to that of the 3-Door, the bigger brother gets a rear bench which accommodates three more passengers. Rear seats up, the car’s capacity is 208 litres, while folding down the bench increases the capacity to 332 litres.

Safety specs include hill hold and hill descent assist options, six airbags, an electronic stability programme (ESP), and electronic brakeforce distribution (ESB). A 9-inch infotainment system offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as a rear camera and Arkamys sound system.
Maruti Suzuki will be assembling the 5-Door at the Gurugram plant, and while orders are already being taken in India, to go on sale in May, further markets including Africa, Australia and Latin America will follow. Suzuki South Africa representatives have not indicated an exact launch date however it can be realistically expected to make local landfall towards the end of the year.
