Award season has highlighted some of the wonderful art that filmmakers have recently created, and what better place to watch the most talked-about films than at one of our favourite local movie theatres?

Here are the award-winning movies currently showing at the Labia Theatre.

The Whale

A psychological drama about a morbidly obese and reclusive English teacher, who tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter, for one last chance at redemption.

“The Whale” had its world premiere at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival where it received a six-minute standing ovation.

Although the movie has just been released, lead actor Brendan Fraser won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actor 2023.

The Banshees of Inisherin

Universally acclaimed, this multi-nominated and award-winning tragi-comedy, is set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland. Padriac, an islander, is devastated when his buddy Colm suddenly terminates their lifelong friendship. He is determined to restore their relationship, but as Colm’s resolve strengthens, he delivers an ultimatum that leads to shocking consequences.

“The Banshees of Inisherin” has various accolades, including best actor and screenplay awards at the Venice International Film Festival, eight nominations at the Golden Globe Awards, nine nominations at the Academy Awards and Critics’ Choice Awards, and ten nominations at the British Academy Film Awards, just to name a few.

The Fabelmans

The critically acclaimed and award-winning coming-of-age drama is loosely based on Spielberg’s adolescence in post-World War 2 Arizona. It tells of a young man, who on discovering a shattering family secret, explores how the power of movies can help one see the truth.

“The Fabelmans” has received numerous awards and nominations, including seven at the Academy Awards, five at the Golden Globe Awards, 11 at the Critics’ Choice Awards and two at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Universally acclaimed, the hilarious and big hearted sci-fi, comedy-action film is about a Chinese-American woman, who becomes an unlikely hero, in her fight against bizarre and bewildering dangers from the multiverse, as the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” was named a top-ten film of 2022 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, and two of the actors won Golden Globes out of the film’s six nominations. These awards come among numerous other nominations and wins.

Triangle of Sadness

This darkly comedic film is an incisive satire of social class prejudices and gender-based  power dynamics, and is about a cruise for the super-rich that goes horribly wrong. A fashion model celebrity couple are among the survivors marooned on an island.

The “Triangle of Sadness” brought in a Golden Globe, BAFTA nominations, four European Film Awards wins and three nominations at the Academy Awards.

Babylon

It has to be seen to be believed.

Set in the late 1920s, as Hollywood transitions from silent to sound films, an epic period comedy-drama about outsized ambition and outrageous excess, as an era of unbridled decadence and depravity leads to the rise and fall of several ambitious dreamers. With music by Justin Hurwitz, the biggest party of the year.

“Babylon” received five nominations at the Golden Globe Awards, nine nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards, three nominations at the British Academy Film Awards and three nominations at the Academy Awards.
