Cape Town – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has rejected calls for the dissolution of the City of Johannesburg Council.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) had announced its intention to file a motion to dissolve the council, citing instability due to frequent changes in government and mayors.
The DA claimed that holding by-elections would offer the chance for a more stable council to be elected.
But Malema responded by asserting that the Joburg council will not be dissolved and emphasised the stability of the city under its current leadership.
“There’s no DA that will dissolve Johannesburg here. If [John] Steenhuisen’s life is dissolved, he must not think that is going to happen in Johannesburg,” Malema told the CCT.
“It’s not going to happen that one. Johannesburg is stable, Johannesburg has got a mayor and the MMCs are up to task and are trying their level best with limited resources and difficulties we are confronted with in Johannesburg,” said Malema during a press conference on Sunday.

He also said that the EFF would challenge a report by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) that exonerated President Cyril Ramaphosa in the Phala Phala matter, a scandal involving a game farm owned by Ramaphosa.
Malema accused state institutions of protecting the outgoing president and announced the EFF’s intention to take the SARB report to court for a judicial review.
The SARB report had cleared Ramaphosa of wrongdoing but noted irregularities in a transaction involving foreign currency.
