Tides of Wool: A story of innovation and sustainability unfolds

A new film is set to make waves in the world of surfing and environmental consciousness. Tides of Wool follows the remarkable journey of Jurie Muller, a sheep farmer and big wave surfer from Vleesbaai, as he tackles the pressing issue of ocean pollution.

Produced by Team Sunday, a digital-first film company under Corona Studios, this original short-format digital film combines the worlds of surfing, farming and recycling into the creation of a unique surfboard.

The inspiration for Tides of Wool struck Jurie Muller when a massive polystyrene buoy washed up on a surf spot in Vleesbaai. Determined to take action, Jurie decided to repurpose the buoy, transforming it into the inner core, or ‘blank,’ of a surfboard.

However, what sets this story apart is the unconventional choice of material for the board’s covering – wool. Drawing inspiration from his environment, Jurie poses a thought-provoking question: What if we replaced fibreglass with sheep’s wool?

Jurie Muller hails from the picturesque farmlands of Vleesbaai in the Garden Route. After experiencing his first exhilarating encounter with a 25-foot wave at Dungeons in 2008, Jurie decided to venture into the world of handcrafting surfboards.

He established his surfboard brand, Gonzo, in 2010, crafting each board with meticulous care and pursuing custom orders while riding the massive waves on his own handcrafted creations.

The film’s premiere is scheduled to take place during the World Surf League 2023 Championship Tour in Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape, on 14 July. Following the premiere, Tides of Wool will be available for viewing on YouTube starting 17 July, allowing a wider audience to witness Jurie’s remarkable journey.
