TEARS animal rescue hosted its renowned sleepathon campaign this November, which allows guests to spend a night in the cattery or kennels with a furry friend…or two.
The annual events aim to raise funds that greatly assist shelter animals by way of rehabilitation, sterilisation and being wholly cared for by all staff. The sleepathons also offer opportunities for adoption.

Donations go towards outreach support within local communities and surrounding areas. These programmes teach children and members of informal settlements how to care for their pets and, in addition, provide vaccinations and sterilisations to pet owners who would otherwise be unable to afford them.

Arrive:
Upon arrival, guests sign in and are given a goodie bag filled with treats. The lovely TEARS team escorts you to your “suite” for the evening. The kennels are lit up with fairy lights. The magic begins.
The buddies we had the pleasure of bunking with were Diesel, Bijou and Gigi. Once we’d set up our sleeping bags, they had no problem making themselves comfortable and coming in close for a cuddle.
Enjoy:
As the sun began to set, we headed towards the entertainment area, which has small fire pits to keep you cosy and plenty of beanbags and benches to recline on. This is where you will have dinner for the evening, at the kitty canteen, which is all completely plant-based and absolutely delicious. Head over to the bow wow bar if you feel keen on a glass of wine. All food and beverages served are included in the ticket cost (R230 per person).
Sleep:
Settling into the evening, we curled into our sleeping bags and prepared for a well-cuddled sleep. The morning came and we woke to an orchestra of howls, but getting out of bed was tricky. Bijou’s cuddles were almost impossible to walk away from.
Unity:
It was a special experience shared among all participants. We all slept side by side, foot to paw, nose to snout, with our canine friends.
This is no doubt the highlight of the year for these furry friends, being showered with unconditional affection. Our departure was dreaded; however, coffee and a buffet of plant-based pastries for breakfast made it a little easier.
Support:
The sleepathon is a great way to connect and meet new people and it can be a great adventure to do as a family. It’s an opportunity to learn about the amazing work done at TEARS and how you can support them. You leave feeling humbled and driven to bring about change.
As the festive season kicks off, now more than ever is the time to get involved.
