‘What I said about Brett was unjustified, unfair and untrue’ – Maimane apologises for 2018 comments about GOOD Party MP

Cape Town – One South Africa Movement (OSA) leader Mmusi Maimane has publically apologised for statements he made about GOOD Party MP Brett Herron during a radio interview in 2018.

According to The Citizen, Maimane labelled Brett Herron as a corrupt and racist criminal.

Reacting to the remarks, Brett Herron took the issue to court, filing papers at the Western Cape High Court, and according to EWN, demanded R2 million in damages from the former DA leader.

“To be called a racist, a criminal, and corrupt is profoundly egregious. It is dishonest and false, and I’m not going to tolerate it,” Herron was reported as saying.

Releasing a statement, Maimane confirmed his remarks, retracted what he had said, and apologised for it.

“On 13 December 2018, in a radio interview on SAfm, I stated that Brett Herron was racist, corrupt and wanted by the police,” Maimane said.

He said that his remark stemmed from a briefing he received on the contents of the Bowman’s Report on corruption in the City of Cape Town.

After studying the report further, Maimane confessed that what he said about Herron was “unjustified, unfair and untrue”.

“As a member of an independent human family in an interconnected society and world, I believe in acknowledging and taking responsibility for my mistakes. I have therefore offered an unconditional apology to Brett which he has graciously accepted,” Maimane said.
