Presented by WHATIFTHEWORLD gallery, Talia Ramkilawan’s solo exhibition consists of seven pieces that visually articulate practises of pleasure and communicate that “pleasure is essential.”
These pieces, titled “Pleasure Over Pain,” are vignettes of the artist’s life that add to an archive that encourages actively pursuing pleasure and the idea that we are all deserving of it.
This body of work is an ode to intimacy, leisure and celebration.

Talia Ramkilawan is a Cape Town-based artist and teacher, and a graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art.
Her work aims to address the trauma, identity and lived experience of a South African Indian identity. She uses a variety of media, including tapestry, video, performance and installation, to visually represent the complexity of one’s relationship to trauma.

Talia’s current exhibition tells stories of intimacy, leisure and celebration in a collaboration of still life, portraiture, and moments captured through unique uses of tapestry as a medium.
“Pleasure Over Pain” explores the intersections and binaries of the artist’s lived experience as a queer Indian woman.

Through this series of works, including titles such as “What I want wants me” and “I’d spend every day with you if it were enough to make you mine,” Talia invites us to indulge in some of the deserving ways she has found pleasure in her world, without any shame.
